Smile: it's effective, simple & fun!

Your first step to a happier you is the smile; this versatile little move is a doddle & has the power to instantly teleport you to happier realms.  A smile lifts the spirits of those around you.  You smile at someone, they smile back, you feel good & smile again, people notice & smile themselves.  Before you know it everyone feels happier.  The day is good, life is good, & all it took was a smile.

Smiling is essential for your happiness & well-being; for which it is both a reflection & an image.  Smiling connects you to Self as well as to others.  You cannot help but smile when you are happy & well.  The gentlest of smiles will lift your heart & comfort your soul in the bleakest of moments. Anyone & everyone can smile, it takes little or no practice, & it is accepted & appreciated by all!

Why Smile?

There will be times when you will find it harder to smile, stuff happens that gets you down; natural mishaps, relationship problems or unexpected changes & challenges.

If you go through a prolonged or particularly despairing period of feeling overwhelmed, down, & as though life has it in for you; you can fall out of the habit of smiling & that in itself makes it harder for you to turn things around.

The thing is; if you practise smiling, gentle, slight-curve-up-of-the-edges-of-your-mouth smiling, it will lift your heart & help lift your spirits too.  A smile reflects good times, & when there seem to be less of these in your life a smile will go a long way in helping to attract them back to you.

This poem was written some years ago during a particularly challenging & bleak period. It cheered us up at the time & has remained on the office wall ever since, cheering us & others on many more occasions.  The words came via the heart not to mind, they felt like a gift that was meant to be shared - as with a smile!

Below are some Top Tips to Keep the Curve on YOUR Lips!

This is a useful exercise to help increase the habit of smiling; it can be comforting at times when you feel less inclined to smile, or when there seems little or nothing to smile about:

Close your eyes & smile.  Raise your eyebrows & open the space between them.  Imagine the sun shining gently on your face.  Take a deep breath inhaling the glow into your lungs.  Feel it radiate through to your heart.  Keep smiling & open your mouth to let out a satisfied sigh.  Repeat this 3 times, & then as often as you remember throughout your day.

Place a fun or amusing picture on the ceiling above your bed; large enough so that you can see it as you wake & before you fall asleep.  Make a habit at the start & end of the day to look up & smile, you'll start the day well, and end it on a good note, & your smile will accompany you in your dreams.  Change the picture from time to time to surprise yourself & to keep the practise fresh.

Smile at innate objects & imagine them smiling back.  This does sound weird, we know!  Try it though, it's quite fun, & after a while, you'll feel they are smiling back at you & start smiling back at yourself too.  It is a bit like when you talked to your teddy & other toys as a child; you start to feel greater support & connection, followed by a magical sense of fun that seeps through your heart & into your life.

Every time you look in a mirror smile at yourself, whether you think you like what you see or not, smile! This can be hard, but if you keep at it you'll be surprised how good it makes you feel.  As you form this habit you will notice the positive effects less as they become the new normal.  You will find yourself smiling many more times throughout the day, others will notice & may even comment, & your life will brighten in many wonderful ways.
